Scripture Union Daily Guide 18th March 2026 – Outline
Jesus’ response to the report of the tragic incident concerning the Galileans (Luke 13:1-2) shows that it is erroneous to assume that tragedy is a direct result of sin. To correct this erroneous thinking, Jesus gave the example of another tragic incident in Jerusalem (Luke 13:3-5). These might probably be the sick people lying by the Pool of Siloam waiting for their healing (John 5:1-5).
Jesus cautioned that instead of focusing on why others suffer, passing judgment and making conclusions, such occurrences should spur us to examine our own hearts and repent of our sins. If God were to deal with us according to our sins, we would all suffer the same fate (Psalms 130:3; Romans 3:23).
Read Luke 13:6-9 again. What does this parable teach about God?
Take note of the intercession of the Vine-dresser for the unfruitful fig tree (Luke 13:8-9). God is patient; He gives a second chance but abhors perpetual unfruitfulness. He expects fruits for his investments in our lives (Isaiah 5:1-2; John 15:1-2). His call to repentance is urgent. To ignore His call to repentance and remain unfruitful is dangerous (Proverbs 29:1; Isaiah 1:18-20).
